Air Quality Consultants provided design advice for residential development adjacent to a Waste Transfer Station.
The project involved a substantial redevelopment of the Cringle Dock Wharf in Battersea to redesign the existing Waste Transfer Station (WTS) at the site and to develop land above and surrounding the WTS to provide a residential-led, mixed use development. AQC was appointed to assist with the design process to ensure that odours produced by the WTS would not adversely affect new users and residents of the proposed development.
The management of odours from a large WTS in such close proximity to highly sensitive development would provide challenging. However, AQC engaged with stakeholders early in the design process, including Wandsworth Council and the current WTS operators, to understand the odour issues, design the mitigation solutions and communicate the findings. A suite of assessment methods, including on site field odour surveys (‘sniff testing’) and odour dispersion modelling of multiple design scenarios, ensured that the development was designed in accordance with the Best Available Techniques for odour control, management and mitigation, and planning permission for the development was subsequently granted.
